Two University of Maryland Medical System Hospitals Ranked Among Top Three In Maryland

Two University of Maryland Medical System hospitals—the University of Maryland Medical Center (Downtown Campus) and UM St. Joseph Medical Center—rank among the top three hospitals in the Baltimore region and the state, according to the U.S. News & World Report's 2023 Best Hospitals, released today.

“Having two of the top three hospitals both in metro Baltimore and in the state of Maryland is indeed a proud moment for all of us at the University of Maryland Medical System,” said Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, President and Chief Executive Officer of UMMS. "This is another example of the work that our team members do every single day to provide ‘A Better State of Care’ across all of the communities in which we are privileged to serve.”

The U.S. News rankings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.

  • UMMC, the System's flagship academic hospital located in Baltimore City, is ranked as the #2 hospital both in the state of Maryland and Baltimore Metro area. UMMC also ranked #23 nationally (up from #44 in 2022) for the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialty.
  • UM SJMC, located in Towson in Baltimore County, is ranked #3 in the state and Baltimore Metro for the sixth consecutive year.

Eight UMMS hospitals earned recognition by U.S. News for "High Performing" in specific specialties, procedures and conditions:

  • UMMC earned "High Performing" ratings in 17 specialties and services: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Cancer, COPD, Colon Cancer Surgery, ENT, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Heart Attack, Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Failure, Kidney Failure, Leukemia/Lymphoma/Myeloma, Lung Cancer Surgery, Pneumonia, Pulmonology & Lung Surgery, Stroke, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), Uterine Cancer Surgery
  • UM SJMC earned "High Performing" ratings in 15 specialties and services: COPD, Colon Cancer Surgery, Diabetes, Heart Attack, Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Failure, Hip Replacement, Kidney Failure, Knee Replacement, Leukemia/Lymphoma/Myeloma, Pneumonia, Prostate Cancer Surgery, Stroke, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and Urology
  • UM BWMC, located in Glen Burnie in Anne Arundel County, for: COPD, Colon Cancer Surgery, Diabetes, Heart Attack, Heart Failure, and Lung Cancer Surgery
  • UM Capital Region Medical Center, located in Largo in Prince George’s County, for: Diabetes, Heart Attack, Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Failure and Stroke
  • UM Upper Chesapeake Health in Harford County, for: Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Stroke (at UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air) and COPD and Pneumonia (at UM Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace)
  • UM Shore Medical Center at Easton, part of UM Shore Regional Health, for: Hip Replacement and Stroke
  • UM Charles Regional Medical Center, located in La Plata in Charles County, for: Stroke
